About Malang

As the second largest city in East Java, Malang has a fascinating ancient history that dates back to the 8th century. It was once a powerful seat of government for the Mataram Kingdom, a Hindu-Buddhist stronghold before the influx of Islam. In later years, the elevated landscape of Malang with its cool climate provided a rural retreat for European residents during the years of Dutch colonization.

Mount Bromo lies just east of Malang and is a popular tourist attraction. It is the most accessible active volcano in Java and is surrounded by a national park. The entire top has been blown off and the crater inside emits a continuous flow of white sulphurous smoke. Pre-dawn trips to see the sun rise over Mount Bromo can be taken on horseback or in four-wheel jeeps.

Families with children will enjoy a trip to Taman Safari Indonesia II located on the slopes of Mount Arjuno. This vast wildlife reserve enables visitors to experience exotic animals up close in a naturally inspired habitat. There is also a choice of beautiful beaches just south of Malang offering stunning coastal scenery. And for cultural enthusiasts, Singosari is a Hindu temple that celebrates the exquisite craftsmanship of a bygone era.
